Academic Challenge Education is more than a transfer of knowledge—It is a process in which young people grow as committed and capable learners. In our small classes, teachers form close, positive relationships with their students and challenge them to build vital reading, writing, and computational skills. Students emerge with the ability and confidence to succeed at the highly interactive and intellectually demanding Harkness tables of the Upper School.

Boys and girls learn differently
We teach all academic subjects in single gender classrooms in grades six to eight, providing an optimum learning environment for boys and girls. In fifth grade, children join in a highly interactive coeducational learning experience. Beyond the classroom, all students enjoy the social and developmental benefits of a coed campus.

A theme-based curriculum
Faculty team-up to teach a comprehensive academic program around a central theme: the ancient world in fifth grade, Hudson River in sixth grade, diversity and identity in seventh grade, and the American experience in eighth grade. They weave together topics in English, history, math, science, technology, and the arts, to create an interdisciplinary dynamic while teaching the reading, writing, and computational skills needed to succeed in the Upper School.

Teaching through experience
Our signature experiential curriculum engages students in creative projects in and out of the classroom with frequent expeditions off campus, including New York City and Hudson Valley sites. Through first-hand encounters with people and places in the wider community, students draw meaningful connections between schoolwork and the real world.

Fostering physical growth
Through interscholastic competition in the Fairchester League older students experience the fun, teamwork, and excitement of team sports and develop athletic skills. Younger students explore a variety of sports and other physical activities through our physical education program. Sports offerings include soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, fencing, baseball, lacrosse, and softball.

Caring for the whole student
Our dedicated faculty understand and appreciate the unique needs of young teens. By interacting with them throughout the day—as teachers, coaches, and advisors—they get to know and care for each student as an individual.

Scenic woodlands and New York City energy
Expansive lawns, wooded walking trails, historic architecture, and Hudson River views provide an inspiring setting for living and learning. Just a train or car ride away lies the excitement of New York City.
