Hoops for Hope:
Making a
Difference

The Masters School gym was filled with excited students and teachers on February 2, as they awaited the arrival of staff and children from Children’s Village for their Hoops for Hope MISH (Masters Interested in Sharing and Helping) class project: a basketball game involving students, faculty, and Children’s Village residents.

The morning of the game, students in the junior class decorated with colorful balloons and banners and prepared for the bake sale and micro-financing information booths. Students who volunteered as one-on-ones were assigned a Children’s Village boy with whom to spend the day. Once Children’s Village participants arrived, they were placed on a team with either teachers or students.

Fans on the bleachers got into the exciting game as they cheered on a cute little boy from Children’s Village playing defense against a 5’11 teacher, or a Masters School student stealing the ball from his math teacher.
In addition to the game, there was a raffle with the prize of tasty treats, a bake sale, micro-loans information booth, and student performances during half-time.

The goal of the event was to raise money through admission and bake sales to fund micro-financing projects through www.kiva.org, the website of a non-profit organization that allows consumers to lend money to entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing countries. According to www.kiva.org, “consumers can ‘sponsor a business’ and help the world’s working poor make great strides towards economic independence.” Once the loan is repaid, one can use that money to sponsor another business, and the cycle continues. Proceeds from Hoops for Hope are also going toward a play pump in South Africa, in which energy is generated when kids play and spin on it. The Junior Class’s Hoops for Hope raised almost $400.

Hoops for Hope brought Masters School students and teachers together as a community to help a good cause, interact with each other on a personal level, and connect with people from different backgrounds to help make a difference.
