Tenth Graders Debate World Issues in Model United Nations

On May 12, the tenth grade held its own full-day Model United Nations program. Under the leadership of two student "Secretary Generals," who followed General Assembly procedures, tenth graders debated and presented resolutions on two well-researched issues, “Water Resources in the World” and “Issues Concerning Poverty and Health for Children in the World.”

"An important objective of the History and Religion Department is to introduce our students to the reality of the integrated, international world in which we live," says history teacher Peter Smith. "Investigating the important international role played by the United Nations is certainly one very relevant way to achieve this goal."

In April, to help them prepare for their Model United Nations project the students journeyed to Manhattan to visit the United Nations. Besides touring the buildings, specialists from the United Nations discussed with them the two topics the students were addressing this year, and the students used the information to write their position papers and eventual “resolutions.”

In the weeks leading up to the Model U.N., tenth grade English teachers worked with students on writing and presenting their position papers.

“This year’s Model U.N. was very successful, and it continues to be one of the highlights of our tenth grade world history program,” comments history teacher Skeff Young.
