Our students were fortunate to hear and meet two highly regarded award-winning authors who recently graced our campus.
On February 28, Jamaica Kinkaid, one
of the most influential and important authors writing
today, presented an eloquent reading onstage at the
Claudia Boettcher Theatre to an audience of upper school
students, faculty, and guests. Following her presentation,
which was co-sponsored by The Hudson Valley Writers'
Center and The Rivertown Arts Coucil, she autographed
copies of her newest book.
Ms. Kincaid won the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts for her first book, a story collection, At the Bottom of the River. Her most recent book is Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalaya, and My Favorite Tool is due out this fall. A visiting professor at Harvard University, in 2004 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

On February 23, Jean Fritz, award-winning author and the recipient of the Presidential Honor Award, visited the Middle School to speak with sixth grade students who have been reading one of her biographies, Traitor: The Case of Benedict Arnold, for their study of the American Revolution in the Hudson Valley. She engaged students in a lively discussion about the book, answered questions, explained her research techniques, and graciously signed their copies of the book.
