We Celebrated in Style!

At a splendid party in historic Estherwood Mansion on October 11, 2007, more than 300 parents, alumnae/i, students, faculty and staff gathered to joyously celebrate the 130th anniversary of The Masters School and the successful conclusion of The Masters Advantage--The Campaign for The Masters School. We gave thanks for the great spirit of our School’s founder, Miss Eliza Bailey Masters, calling to mind her caring, her daring, her extraordinary energy, and her vision.

During the evening's festivities, Dobbs 16 offered songs that showcased their talent, dedication, fun-loving spirit, and idealistic vision of the world. Henry Sloane Coffin Chair of Religion Jane Rechtman led us with a beautiful invocation. History teacher Matt Ives, representing the faculty, expressed his gratitude for the encouragement and opportunities he has been given to keep learning, develop new programs, take risks, and embrace the challenge to grow as a teacher.

Representatives of the Middle School, eighth graders Anna Belle and Brian, were thankful for many things. Anna Belle mentioned the public speaking skills and self-confidence that she has developed in the Middle School. Reflecting on field trips that enable students to learn through “first-hand educational experiences,” Brian acknowledged the middle school teachers “who really care and make learning so interesting.”

Upper School students highlighted powerful aspects of their experience. Katarina described advanced science offerings, opportunities for independent research, the engagement and challenge of learning around the Harkness table, and the vigor and passion of teachers who constantly challenge and push. Wang mentioned the inspiration he drew from interacting with unique and motivated people and highlighted the dorm experience that results in deep friendships with people from around the country and the world. Barry told of his joy in being a member of Dobbs 16, singing and performing and having fun but also growing from the opportunity to serve as an ambassador for our School. Lauren spoke passionately of the love she has developed for community service and her dream to found her own Children’s Village.

Among the evening's highlights was the unveiling of a plaque with the names of individuals who had most generously contributed to the Campaign, ensuring the continued success of our School for generations to come!
