Founders Day 2006:
Passion and Pride

In celebration of the 130th anniversary of the School, on Founders Day students received a brief history lesson and participated in a fun-filled day of activities, the highlight of which was the annual Delta-Phi tug-of-war.

As is her custom, Head of School Maureen Fonseca captured the spirit by first appearing as Eliza B. Masters at a morning meeting in the Middle School’s Great Hall. At morning meeting in the theater, the Upper School was introduced to Life Trustee Edgar M. Masters H’91, great nephew of founder Miss Masters, who got into period character in top hat before introducing his great aunt, Eliza Masters (a.k.a. Dr. Fonseca).

In her remarks to upper school students, Dr. Fonseca talked about how the same values established in 1877 have carried through to today, including great academics, strong character, integrity, caring and compassion, matters of faith, and athletic competitions.

“What is so wonderful about this Founders Day celebration is that although many changes have occurred through the years, the spirit and so much else has prevailed from the 19th century through the 20th century and now into the 21st century,” she said. “How inspiring it is to see strong leaders being formed to help our challenging world.”

At the afternoon re-enactment of one of the most important traditions established by the Dobbs Athletic Association (DAA) begun in the year 1900, students designated as Deltas or Phis met on Evans Field for the lively tug-of-war competition. It was only fitting that on a beautiful day on our picturesque campus that the competition ended in a tie!
