Commencement 2006:
History is Made

On a very windy June 10 afternoon, family, friends, guests, and faculty gathered to witness the commencement of the 103 members of the Class of 2006—the largest co-ed graduating class in the School’s history.

We were honored to have actor and activist Alec Baldwin as our keynote speaker. Addressing the Class of 2006, whom he referred to as “apprentice adults,” he exhorted them to consider the spirit of protest as an important and meaningful “expression of democracy.” He appealed to them to “face the issues” that are important to them, no matter what they may be, and he urged them to protest what they think is wrong. In closing, he called on them to “help save the world.”

In their remarks, both co-class presidents articulated, with deep feeling and authentic voices, the impact their experience at The Masters School has had on their young lives. They spoke about the class bonds they had developed—“the community of ’06”—that had enabled them to move forward individually with their own personal integrity and continual willingness to be thoughtful on their journey. Their fellow graduates’ success in life, they predicted, will not be his or her fame and fortune, “but their personal character.”

Commented Head of School Maureen Fonseca, “I believe that The
Masters School upper school graduates of 2006 will indeed take up the challenge to do their part to save the world.”

As the graduates head off to many excellent colleges and universities, we wish them all the very best!
