Mustache-a-thon Winner by a Hair is…

At morning meeting on January 4, 2007, the student body waited expectantly for the verdict. The reason: A group of dedicated faculty members had toiled over winter break and endured the disapproval of family, friends,
and colleagues to compete for the coveted title of “Best Mustache” in the 2007 Mustache-a-thon sponsored by ninth grade MISH representatives.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, ninth grade MISH representatives and the class advisor, history teacher Matt Ives, put out a call to the faculty to grow a mustache for charity. The brave teachers and staff who signed up chose a charity to represent and agreed to work hard not to shave until after the unveiling on the first day back from winter break. The ninth grade was divided into teams to support  each charity, and the teams worked to raise money—holding  bake sales, signing up sponsors over vacation, selling gourmet hot chocolate during break, selling bracelets, and other means they dreamed up.

The mustaches were unveiled in a tournament style competition in the theatre, with a generally impartial applause-o-meter. As the teachers strutted their stubble on stage, it became clear that this was about more than just the ’stache—many participants were decked out in full costume as though their mustache had a personality of its own. There was a purple Fu Manchu, two swashbuckling Zorros, and a Hulk Hogan, to name just a few.

College counselor Art McCann with his studly Barry Gibb emerged the crowd's favorite by a hair. His charity, Surf Aid International, will receive all of his group’s fundraising efforts plus one-quarter of all the other money raised. Charities benefiting from the twelve other Mustache-a-thon participants include The Grameen Foundation, UNICEF, Heifer International, World Wildlife Foundation, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester, The Peekskill Museum, The Dobbs Ferry Fire Department, Violence Policy Center, New Yorkers for Smaller Classes, Center for Constitutional Rights, Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research, and AIDS Related Community Services.
