On January 12, the Upper School honored the life and work of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, as well as famous athletes and other individuals who have made a difference in the world in a moving program of poetry, reflections, music, dance, video, and artwork.
Addressing the program’s theme, “The Power of One: Celebrating Our Common Humanity,” in her opening remarks Head of School Maureen Fonseca told the assembly, “Today we dare to acknowledge, to claim the reality that we do each have the power to make a difference. We recognize our own soul force—our own capacity to love passionately. Each generation is called to help make a new world...we dream of a better world not just for ourselves but on behalf of others. In Dr. King’s words, spoken in 1959, ‘We can choose either to walk the high road of human brotherhood or to tread the low road of man's inhumanity to man.’”
Participants in the inspiring morning program included the Glee Club, African-American Studies students, Dance Tech II, Dance Tech III, International Club, Groove, Gay Straight Alliance, Dobbs 16, MISH, Urban Connection, and individual students and faculty.
Relating to the program’s theme, Dr. Fonseca said she saw Dr. King’s message in action. She shared powerful reflections from students at the recent Head’s Dinner led by Thompson Dorm, which, she said, celebrated The Masters School community’s common brotherhood and sisterhood. “One student articulated, ‘I discovered at Masters a great family, some great friends, and brothers and sisters that I would one day lead and share my knowledge with...These are the people who have inspired me to better not just myself but those around me. And without their inspiration I wouldn’t have realized that my arms were long enough to reach the stars....’”
